Exquisite Corpse Soundscape Artist Statement

When I was first introduced to the Exquisite Corpse Soundscape Project, I really didn’t know what direction I wanted to go in. Before starting on Adobe Audition, I took some time to click through and listen to the sounds the rest of the class recorded. I noticed that most of the class, myself included, recorded sounds of normal everyday activities.

There was enough of a variety in these mundane tasks that I felt it would be possible to take a listener through a daily routine. I started the piece with the sound of an alarm going off and then the sounds of a morning bathroom routine. I wanted the listener to relate to these everyday sounds and picture themselves in this story. I intentionally had the story start and end with this bathroom routine to show the repetitiveness of life.

As I mentioned before, I wanted the listener to relate and feel as if they were along for the story so I put an emphasis on changing locations and movement. The feedback from the class during the critique led me to believe that this decision was effective as many of my classmates said they appreciated the movement in the piece.

I wanted to include relatable actions and feelings so I used the sound of tapping to represent tapping fingers on the steering wheel while driving. I was happy to see that one of my classmates related to this tapping habit.

Overall I am happy with my project but I feel it could have used a bit more of a climax or a destination in the middle instead of morning routine - driving - night routine. I enjoyed working with sound for the first time and it is definitely something I am interested in for my work in the future.
