Zine Artist Statement

For my zine project, I wanted to design a piece of work that was both interesting to look at, and provided some social commentary. I really like the visual elements of skiing so I knew I wanted to incorporate them in some way.

Climate change is an issue that is extremely important to me so I decided to combine commentary on climate change with skiing. I had a vision of people doing winter activities in a world without snow. I started by setting the scene of my zine in a desert and decided on a warm color palette to exaggerate the contrast between my zine and normal ski images.

I have always loved colorful retro design and I wanted to give it a shot with my zine. I decided on a flat, geometric design with continuous lines connecting the pages of the zine. If I had to do something differently I think I would stay entirely on Adobe Illustrator so the zine would be completely flat and cohesive.

The most challenging part of this project was coming up with my idea and I think I could have benefited from a more organized brainstorming approach. Overall, I am happy with how my project turned out and I feel that my intentional focus on the principles of design was effective.
